Twila stared long and hard at him for a moment. There was a secret here, her old self awaking deep within her conscience. There was a time when secrets were all she lived for, but that time was long ago. Still, she liked them, but Twila had other motivations now. Peace, quiet, and companionship were what drove her now. That, and revenge. Oh how she loved revenge.
All of her scattered thoughts seemed to ricochet back into one stream of thought when he asked her name, like a rubber band snapping backwards. She couldn't very well give him her real name, so after a moment of calm assessment, she smiled, hoping it played off as shy. "Kaitryn. It's a pleasure to make your aquaintance." She offered a pale hand for him to shake. Yes, I think I'll keep this one....

"And it's a pleasure meeting you." At least content that he had a name to place with the face, Zephyr took the proffered hand to shake, oddly stricken with the difference in their hands alone. Hers was delicate, smooth..small. His was rough in comparison, large. He dwelled on it no longer than the time it took to shake hands, and he then released hers and wrapped both hands around the mug in front of him. The firewhiskey was forgotten for the time being, since his attention was drawn elsewhere like a moth to a metaphoric flame.

It seemed like Twila's old sense of self was coming to, like winter giving way into spring. Sure, she wasn't quite like her old self, but she was starting to pull together for the first time in ages. She smiled sweetly at him, and leaned closer, using the feminine wiles she vaguely remembered from her teenage years. "So tell me... why does such a sweet boy like you not have a girlfriend? I find that very hard to believe." She pouted slightly, as if she thought he was lying to her.
Oh yes, Twila was back. Zephyr would be hers in just a matter of time. Take that, Alexander.

Why this kept recurring as a question rang a little odd, but Zephyr didn't have it in him to be rude about the subject. She definitely didn't know, else it wouldn't be a question. That was the only real encouragement he had in that matter. "The best I can say about it is that I haven't been..able to stay in a relationship for long. I stopped actively trying recently, it was too much trouble."

Can't he tell I'm hitting on him? Twila inwardly groused, resisting the urge to roll her eyes. She knew that she looked a lot younger than she actually was (simply thanks to good genes, thank Merlin,) and so it couldn't be her age holding him back from responding to her flirting. He didn't recognize her for who she was, either. So what was the deal? Maybe he was... no. She didn't get that sort of vibe off of him. Maybe she was just losing her touch. No, that was impossible.
Resisting the urge to really pout in frustration, Twila leaned back a little, no longer that close to him. "I see. I just got out of a relationship myself..." That was it, open up to him, lure him into feeling comfortable... "Not too soon, either. He was an abusive git. I finally got up enough courage to leave." Hell, it wasn't much of a lie. She could sustain it, she was sure. She played with her teacup, the perfect picture of meek femininity.
Like a black widow spider... come closer my dear, and I shall kill you...

"Oh, I-I'm sorry." Facing the fact that that came across as idiotic only after the words were out of his mouth, Zephyr sat back as well when he felt a bit of heat rising in his face. Now starting to feel awkward about the entire issue, he just kept himself from staring - it would be fuel for the fire. To say that it was difficult was a bit of an understatement, as well. She still didn't know what was really wrong with him, else she would have run by now. Like every female before her.
"At least you managed to get away from it." He again came off a bit lamely, but was very unaccustomed to such subjects. "Sorry, don't..quite know where I'm going with this."

Twila laughed, a quiet, bell-like sound that was almost a dim echo of true mirth. She sounded like it was something she was unaccustomed to. "Don't apologize. It's over, and I have come to terms with it. Now... I want to move on." She gave him a pretty smile, her violet eyes staring at him for a minute. He looked very vaguely familiar. He was too young to go to school with her, so what was it?
Twila hadn't seen anyone outside of the manor in so long, so it had to have been in print somewhere. He wasn't a friend of Alexander's, or Marcel's. Print... not a book, he was too young to have done anything significant... so the newspaper? A magazine? But why?
A faint, swimming memory was coming to her. Halloween... years ago. What about it? Alexander had been happy as a lark, going on and on about how they had shown the order.... why? A little girl was involved, the child of Remus Lupin. Twila would never forget Remus Lupin, who featured in many of her nightmares. Werewolves. Holy shit. He was one of Fenrir Greyback's spawn.
"You were bitten." Twila said suddenly, her face becoming alert. "Fenrir Greyback. I remember you now." Unlike most people who meet a werewolf, Twila didn't sound frightened. Instead, she sounded like she had solved a very complex puzzle that had been bothering her.

Zephyr's face went quickly from interested, to shocked..then pale as if he'd seen a ghost. She did know, and now it was out. He may as well have transformed in front of her and ravaged someone. Taking a slow, shaking breath, he planted both feet firmly on the floor to keep in the urge to get up and run. It didn't work very well, but he wasn't going to make a scene, either.
"Six years ago this Halloween." His voice was now lowered in pitch, to make it hard for anyone else nearby to hear - not that that was much of a concern, with the bar nowhere near capacity that afternoon. "I got in that..bastard's way to keep a little girl from getting ripped apart. It was a split-second choice I made, and I've lived with it since." His expression now had a hardness to it, and every muscle in his less-than-muscular body seemed to be tensed. "If you want to leave, I won't blame you..really." The encouragement sounded hollow all the same.

Twila reached out and gently placed her hand on his arm in a rare show of support, and what was even more ironic was, she wasn't acting. "We all have things we don't like about ourselves, Zephyr." She said honestly, her voice just as quiet. "I don't hold it against you that you are what you are-" she refrained from saying werewolf only because they weren't alone, "-just as you don't seem to hold it against me that I seem to have forgotten all of my social graces."
"Relax. No one is coming to lynch you." She finished her tea and gestured for the waitress to bring her another one, looking up at Zephyr expectantly. So that was why he didn't seem so worried about spilling his guts to a stranger- he longed for companionship. Well, well, well. That was certainly useful.

"I can honestly say you're the first person to ever say something like that after learning of this." Eyes fixating on the delicate hand now on his arm, he simply stared for a time as if transfixed. He actually was, as it was hard to think of someone that wouldn't be scared when sitting across from a werewolf. Kaitryn was different, but Zephyr hadn't realized how different. It was a bit of a comfort where there was rarely any.
"Thank you." He finally said at length, slowly relaxing from his ready-to-jump-at-anything status to look across at her and meet her eyes without flinching. He still wasn't entirely calmed yet, but that was easy to understand. Acting on some sudden, strange impulse, he placed his free hand on top of hers. There were no real ulterior motives involved, except rare contact.

Twila shrugged it off. It clearly wasn't as big a deal to her as it was to him- if only because she dealt with werewolves quite frequently. She had screwed over Remus Lupin in school, and now she had Fenrir Greyback as a houseguest. While Greyback was an ass, she didn't attribute that to his "curse," but rather his personality.
Twila tensed when he willingly touched her, looking just as surprised as he did. She wasn't used to human contact in any form, and it was... well, pleasant, surprisingly. "Oh." She said softly, blinking. "You're.... welcome."

"Here I go, jumping into things." Attributing the tension he could see in her to his bold maneuver, he lifted his hand and placed it on the table instead. His sense of boundaries was very much skewed, as the only real contact and experience with people he had was within his family. "I meant no offense by that..I apologize."

"You didn't offend me." Twila countered, looking up at him with a slight frown. "I'm just not used to being touched, really. It's something I need to get used to." Twila's family had never been very touchy-feely, and so Twila had never harbored any sort of need to be cuddly. Hugs were very rare things from her, as she didn't see much point in them. Apparently, if she wanted to keep him as a pet, however, she would have to get used to it. "I'm sorry."

"Now we're both apologizing." Smiling more at the situation than the fact he was bringing up, Zephyr shook his head. "I think we can just call it even..maybe talk about something else." His condition may not have been an issue, but he was still reluctant to linger around anything that could bring it back to the forefront.

"What would you like to talk about?" Twila mused, watching him. She was just as eager to change topics, but for different reasons. The more they talked, the more she could get to know about him. The more she knew, the easier it would be to control him.
