October 31st, 1981
What should have been both a joyous and tragic day for the Wizarding World - the date on which Lord Voldemort killed Lily and James Potter and was himself defeated when he attempted to kill young Harry Potter - never occured. The reason? The prophecy behind the entire event never happened, or at least it was never heard by Voldemort himself.
Sibyll Trelawny still had predicted what could have marked out an equal and Chosen One on that cold and wet night at the Hog's Head, but it would remain known only to Albus Dumbledore. Divination is always such an imprecise art that the Headmaster thought Ms. Trelawny was merely struck by some strange fit and never believed that what she spoke would come true. After all, Voldemort and his followers had been wreaking havoc openly for close to a decade at that point, and it seemed there was no end in sight for the conflict that was already ripping families apart.
No word ever reached Voldemort that there was any threat to his reign of terror, so there was no reason for him to act against the Potters. 1981 came and passed just like any other year, and in the following months, the war continued just as it had. True, there were less attacks, but no less violence due to the sheer ferocity of the periodic attacks. Life simply went on for all involved in spite of it. Many families sprang up in the intermittent years, coming out of a universal longing and need to pass on traits, bloodlines and even just out of ensuring the survival of many ways of life. Every day was uncertain and filled with worry, and each one could be the last many would live to see.
For ten years this continuous tug-of-war continued with no clear victor, until the dawning of 1991. In that year, the uneasy arrangement between both sides in the war may very well break - and when it does, all Hell will break loose.
