Juggling the option of going out to find his sister who had to have already found something to occupy her time or staying where he was to look through the many crammed bookshelves of Flourish and Blotts, Shawn decided to keep up his search. Already with a good idea of what books he was going to be saving up for - a few of the better Quidditch strategy, gameplay and history books - he was also looking for other subjects. Sports, especially Quidditch, were only one of his major interests, so his taste in what he read tended to reflect that.
Finding a portable wizard's chess set set up at the end of one of the bookshelves set up on the upper level of the store, he took the time to direct a few of the pieces - and they oddly listened. Playing with pieces that weren't your own rarely went well, and it was so much of a surprise that he stayed and dictated both black and white pieces - not really thinking about the fact that watchers might find someone playing a game alone odd. He didn't really care about the oddity bit, but actually enjoyed being able to play the game. The set would end up being added to his growing list of things to save up for.

Time is a wheel in constant motion Always rolling us along Tell me who Wants to look back on there years and wonder Where Those Years have Gone ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The fact that she was due to pick up her school robes had brought her to Diagon Alley and she was planning on stopping in to a few of the stores to get some things for class. Like she wanted to get a book she could enchant to lock. Concidering that she knew what trouble students could get into each year. She wanted to protect her notes, ot from peeking but rather from something as unfortunate as having them destroyed. She had the package with her robe under an arm and was looking a book that reminded her of her Care for Magical Animals Book. She had to pet the spine to make it open. She would admit she was rather charmed with the book and had already decided to buy it before the pages even showed her the soft lilac colored pages. She that was added to her shopping things. More Quill's the little black cat her daughter called Nexus had eaten her last one when she left it on the table. Ran right off with it and hid under the couch. Like with many things that had amused Lily and she'd laughed letting it keep the Quill until it was so chewed and mangled it no longer resembled one than she pulled it from the kitten and tossed it out.
She saw Shawn obviously before he saw her he seemed absorbed with the wizard chess game. She smiled faintly. Cora's kids were like her own and vice versa. Lily who was dressed in witching clothing today moved to watch how the game went. The sweeping black robes she wore over a light white gown made her hair brighter but Lily seemed to favor either white or black in her wizarding clothing. The boy was good. Obviously he had excellent genes but still. "Well, hullo Shawn." she said as she balanced the things she was purchasing. "Your father is really good at Wizard Chess too..a hobby of yours ?" she asked him with her head tipped to the side. Did Lily spoil the children, yes she did she spoiled all of the children actually. If you were a second generation Marauder there was a good chance your inner family circle would do that. Just as Lily was contemplating making this a back to school gift. She was wondering what to get Selena at the moment too. Since she'd not buy one a gift randomly without buying the other one.

Playing both sides of the board without bias, Shawn refocused his attention slowly on other things as he backed both sides up into a near-stalemate. Smiling amusedly at the advice the various pieces now seemed to see the need to offer, he shook his head and kept studying the board. Figuring out ways to back out of that stalemate, he left things up to chance and started redirecting the pieces, until there were only five on each side. Almost to the point of victory with the black pieces, he was drawn out of the game when a familiar voice spoke nearby.
He turned to see Lily standing there, and by the way it seemed, she had been watching his little show of chess expertise. "Hey, aunt Lils." He smiled a little sheepishly, knowing he'd been caught. "Dad was the one that taught me, I've been stuck on the game ever since." He answered the question with a slight shrug. "Good way to occupy time and..forget where you are. I guess that's why I like it so much."

Time is a wheel in constant motion Always rolling us along Tell me who Wants to look back on there years and wonder Where Those Years have Gone ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ She admired the way he could play with out bias that in iteself was remarkable the silvery white pieces were the ones that Lily was most fond of. Naturally it would seem. She had a head for the game but Wizard chess something seh rarely played these days. It had been a hobby before things like O.W.L.S and than the N.E.W.T.S had gotten her. She played Severus and Remus in it both she was sure was better than her she was impartial to certain pieces. She liked the horses so the knights were her favorite. "You do know the white pieces are my favorite right, Shawn ?" she laughed merrily and it lit her face as she touched her fingers along the base of the item. "This one is nicer than the one I had." she said. Yes she did mean had. Since the children had been surprised and pleased by the moving piece and carried them off over time. She'd lost half her pieces. Yet. If they made her children happy that was all that she could even ask.
"Hey, your really good at that." she said as she folded her arms across her chest in admiration. "Yes, I played your dad he didn't teach me but I needed coaching to beat him." she laughed. She nodded it seemed alot of people would rather be somewhere else than where they were. She ran a hand through her hair and nodded. 'Might be good to take with you to school too." she said picking up a white piece to look it over. Of course it was the horse few people knew about her great love of animals. It seemed that Lilith had inherited it. "Why would you want to forget where you are ?" she asked him as she set the piece back down on the board, and idly watched it reset itself. She nudged a pawn foward absently. As she looked up at him curiously.

"I had an idea about that, yes." Glancing at the row of taken white pieces, he absently wondered what she had thought of the way he'd directed some of them. Rather risky takes on both sides, but the white seemed more apt to those bold moves. The set itself seemed to be a bit biased, but if he ever got one, he would try to remedy it.
"I've had a lot of practice." was his response to the compliment, along with a bit of a smile. He didn't think his skill was all that extraordinary when compared to others he had played, but he did tend to analyze strategy and the pros and cons of moves before doing anything which often gave him an advantage. "It would be, my old one is rather beat up and the pieces are chipped." His father had given him that particular set to learn with, and he knew the pieces so well that he most often played the games by himself. When the pieces didn't trust whoever was directed them, they often rebelled and acted as they wanted to. That gave him a bit more of an advantage, one he didn't want.
"Well..I really only try to forget where I am and what's going on around the full moon." He kept his voice lowered, reluctant for anyone to hear that. Saying it usually gave away what was being talked about, and he didn't know how many questionable people were around that could possibly hear. "Plus, it gets my mind off of homework sometimes and gives me something to do."

Time is a wheel in constant motion Always rolling us along Tell me who Wants to look back on there years and wonder Where Those Years have Gone ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The smile that found its way on her face made it light up and she shook her head. "I guess I am just predictable eh ?" she murmured and examined the chess board again. Making sure it was in perfect condition. Though dividing her attention between it and her son in all but blood. "I think your movement are bold and startling." she said as she looked up to him. "There is the old muggle saying that Fortune favors the bold..I think it works for you." she agreed readily. It certainly did fit the young man standing in front of her. He would be taller than her. Than again most of her friends were it was a known fact by her fifth year. When everyone grew like trees around her. Lily wasn't too short but it was the fact everyone else was just taller.
"I wish I had but I have been so busy with my getting ready for the school year, and looking after the wee ones." she meant her two youngest not Harry. She saw her oldest on occassion when he wasn't over hanging out with Sirius. Like father like son she supposed and in some ways that did make her sad. "Ah well you see. I think that the biggest problem with some items that are enchanted over time they take a liking to there owners and are receptive to them." she said. Her lips pressed slightly as she finished examing the board. It seemed to be flawless and rather well made. Boards like that came and went through the place and Lily wasn't surprised. It seemed to be popular or a hidden hobby of alot of wizards and witches.
"I know but I am going to work on that too for your sister." she said "I don't want to say to much about it. However you know I can accomplish things when I put my mind to it." she added with a dip of her head. She didn't mention what potion or the effects and benefits. She was just letting him know she was going to help as best she could. She lifted the board up and winked at him. "Sounds as good as anything to me." she said "Lets get it and call it a Back to School gift eh ?" she offered and there would be no telling Lily no when she set her mind to something like that. "Maybe you can help me find something for your sister as well, since it would be unfair to not get you both something nice." she said with a nod of her head. Wanting to bring his mind off the things he was worried about.

Shawn had been called many things in his life - most were 'gems' from school that he would never repeat, of course - but bold never had been one of them. He didn't exactly agree, as he just played the game with a whole heart and everything in. There were few things he was content with just doing halfway, and chess would never be one. Strategy was one strong point, and he had been working on it to hopefully pursue a spot on his house's Quidditch team at school. It was a dream, but he would at least try to follow it. "If only that trait could translate into other parts of my life, huh?"
He nodded when she spoke of the enchantments favoring those that used them all the time, as he knew it was the truth. Even when he tried to play his father on a few occasions, the game had been a bit jilted in his favor. Still, they had been evenly matched in skill, so it wasn't that big of a factor. "I understand that, but it's not exactly fair when I try to play someone. I don't want that much of an advantage." He operated on the principle of even standards, not liking to have an advantage over anyone in anything he did.
He merely nodded at the mention of help for his sister. While he was grateful and expected Lily to keep her word, he wouldn't say anything about it yet. He had learned long ago not to get his hopes up too high about anything. "You don't have to get this for me." Though he knew she wouldn't budge, Shawn felt the need to be sure she wasn't thinking he expected it of her. He had seen the price on the set, and while it might not be a very big thing to most, it seemed a bit extravagant. When one was used to bargain hunting and accepting second-best, anything above that seemed a bit unnecessary.
Deciding not to argue as she had that sort of stubborn look he recognized as brooking no argument, he gave a bit of a sheepish smile. "I think that would fit as a back-to-school and birthday present." Whatever she said, he was going to stick to that idea. Already starting to forget why he had come in, he glanced around at the nearest shelves, trying to orient himself to where they were. "Yeah, sure, I'll help. Do you have something in mind already, or did you need me to help figure out the specifics?"TAG TO: Lily WORD COUNT: 425 - without coding MUSIC: New Divide - Linkin Park MUSE: ^__^ NOTES: Whee, getting my word count up!

This World Has , Only one Sweet Moment Anyone speaking ill of her extended family should probly do it out of hexing range. Lily wasn't one quick to anger but the one thing she loved above all else was the children. Not just her's but the Black and Lupin's as well. Thus the first person she found to be making fun of them would likely find themselves with detention that they did not want. Lily wasn't a stern woman nor was she a mean one. However she was certainly not above giving a peice of her mind to those that deserved it. It came with being a red-head she was given to blow ups on occassion. It was her motherly nature that always seemed to temper them. "Well..Shawn your a Hufflepuff thats going to get you a bit of teasing right there." she said and rolled her eyes faintly. "I always found the rivalry between the Houses, not on the Quidditch Field to be redundant." she gave him a quick smile. "You just need to find like minded folks, reach out to them." she said with a dip of her head. "Everyone has a place." she explained softly. 'Take for instance me. Most of my friends were either Slytherin or Gryffindor." she shrugged. "I'm just saying look for friendships where you can find them."Maybe than you will feel like that in more than chess." she said. "Besides if it gets to be too much I will be on the third floor, I teach Charms and you can always drop in on me if you need to."
"Yes, I understand that. I feel much the same playing games with the kids." she said "Theres only so many times I can play a game without figuring out how to dominate it. So you need a challange." of course Lily was talking about the board games she played with the kids when they were home. Usually it was the two youngest. "Your very much like your father, Shawn." she said with a smile. "I remember him saying something similar in the Common's Room during N.E.W.T'S." she shook her head. She'd often been on the outside of the little group until her seventh year, and than she'd fit in because Prongs had dragged her into his group. It had taken alot of getting use to even for her. Lily still didn't count herself as a popular girl. Sure boys liked her but when your were younger and your hormones ruled you who couldn't say they didn't like someone.
"Nope I don't have too." she agreed "The difference is I want too." she told him. Patting his shoulder and handing him the board as they went. "Now don't say anything to get your mother's hopes up." she dropped her voice to a lower level. "Professor Snape and I are in the process of completely reworking the Wolvesbane Potion." she said "I think it will help." she added. "I know that you worry for her, as any one would worry for there sibling and I respect that. Your mother has alot on her at the moment I know too.I told her we were going to give it a go." she wanted to give him some reassurance. She couldn't tell anyone else about that because she didn't want to get them hyper about something they were still going to need to test. "So hang in there." she murmured. Lily herself wasn't big on being wealthy she could take it or leave it. She'd grown up in a poor part of town herself. She prefered doing for others anyways, it was just how she was.
"Yes back to school." Lily said innocently choosing not to hear the and birthday present part. She pushed her hair back from her face and picked up a few more things. Lily always made sure to have stuff to cover any first year students who came to her with nothing. Just in case, especially the muggle born one's who were not sure about there place in all of it. Lily was concidering the question and she twirled her locket between her fingers. "I am thinking a book of some sort." she said "Maybe a journal too so she can keep her thoughts locked up. You know privacy and such." she said as she tapped her finger to her lips. "She is a bookworm like I am I love to read, I just need to know what interests her she hasn't already read." she laughed. She paused as she started for the counter than looked to him. "Oh, is there anything else you were suppose to be getting here or looking for ?" Lily had a mind to ask.

"I know, already went through a year of being looked at as a duffer." Shawn used the simile without flinching, as he'd had the association applied so many times that it didn't even sting any more. Hufflepuffs were often seen as the bottom of the barrel and the house of students that no one else wanted, but he didn't regret being sorted into it. So many of his housemates had so much promise, and when achievements were made, they seemed much more special. "As long as I know where to find you, I think I'll be fine." He gave a smile as if to soften his earlier words.
Shawn nodded as she spoke of games, agreeing because he knew she was speaking truth from experience. His current chess prowress had taken just a few months of steady practice to perfect, though it was also a game of strategy - something that a lot of people had trouble with. He was both well-versed in the gameplay and the strategy that went with it, making the game a practice in patience more than anything else. When she told him that he was like his father, though, he paused. "I haven't had anyone say that to me in a while." He commented quietly, saying it as most people saw Coralie first and foremost in him, not Remus. He had traits from his father, yes, but they were matched by traits from his mother that were a bit more noticeable. "But..I guess I can see it."
Handed the chess board in spite of protests that he might liked to have given, Shawn gave a bit of a resigned smile and followed her lead. He now knew what he was going to be doing with the rest of his break before the start of term - getting to know and trust the pieces that went with the new board. He would keep the one his father had given him, granted, but it would stay at home for use there.
"I wasn't planning on saying anything about it, I'm just glad that someone's decided to try and do something." He also kept his voice lowered, knowing this wasn't a matter to be brought up in hearing range of anyone else for the time being. The simple fact of possible change would be enough to think about, as it was a step in the right direction. "One less thing to worry about."
Watching as she started gathering up other supplies - no doubt as a precautionary measure just in case there were students coming to school that would need them - Shawn took the time to look around himself. Granted, he had been spending a lot of time in the store lately - along with almost every other one in the alley - but he was trying to remember where he'd spotted things that his sister might like. He hadn't had money to get any of them, but had been on the lookout. "Yeah, I think she might get use out of another journal, she's always writing a lot of stuff down." Glancing towards the counter, he answered the next question partially with a shake of his head. "I've already got all the supplies I need for going back, I just really came in here to look."
