[INNER THOUGHTS]
Overview: Severus is a cold, calculating man with a sometimes bitterly sarcastic nature. As a boy, he was insecure and often lonely, qualities that are often picked upon and deepened by school bullies, and as a result of this, for the longest while, he withdrew into himself.
Over the years, he has become a more self assured man, to the degree that he is almost full of himself. He is supremely talented in his chosen specialities and this has given him a degree of confidence. He has a calm and collected demeanour and often shows very little emotion. However, even with the fact that he now has a stronger sense of self, beneath that there is still the potential to expose the boy that lies within.
Likes: Dark arts, Lily, potions, firewhiskey (in moderation), sarcastic humour, logic puzzles, snakes, solitude
Dislikes: James Potter, Sirius Black, the Death Eaters (he keeps that under wraps), needless bullying (though he is prone to it when wounded), the term ‘mudblood’, butterbeer, migraines >.<
Habits: Holds the bridge of his nose when annoyed, keeps his hands in the sleeves of his robes, drums his fingers when working out a problem, tends to look through someone when speaking to them, arches his fingers when in thought, reacts to hostility with sarcasm
Strengths: Potions, dark arts and combating them, occlumency, creating new spells, duelling, ‘winning’ personality
Weaknesses: Vulnerable beneath his front, short tempered, not fully trusted by the Order (if by choice), jaded, in certain areas very bitter
Fears: That his occlumency will fail him (he slaves over it as a result), that Voldemort shall target Lily (she is muggleborn and a quite proficient witch), that he is being eaten away from the inside by his role as a double agent, with both sides believing that he is their double agent

[HISTORY]
Severus Snape was born to Eileen Prince and Tobias Snape. Eileen Prince was one of the best potion practitioners of her time and this is something that has rubbed off on Severus to quite a startling degree. Tobias was a muggle who had been enamoured with Eileen and had, to a degree, charmed her away from the wizarding world, this was something that was only going to breed resentment down the line, especially when their son started to show signs that he had inherited his mother’s abilities.
Their poverty, with Eileen having no support from her wizarding family, and arguments over Severus’ upbringing led to a breakdown in the relationship of Severus’ parents. Severus’ father was cold towards him, blaming him for the problems in his relationship even as he still argued hotly with Eileen, and he never built a relationship with his son. Eileen was worn down by the arguing and just didn’t have the energy to care, eventually she brought the relationship to its natural conclusion in leaving Spinner’s End.
A rare bright spot in Severus’ life was meeting a muggle who Severus observed magical tendencies in over a period of time observing her. He struck up a friendship with Lily, but sometimes discomforted her in his way of speaking about muggles, eventually he inadvertently did harm to her relationship with her sister, Petunia, and that is something that has to this day not been rectified.
Severus was not the most sociable of creatures, and with his only friend in the strong rival to his House, he did not get on too well in student relationships. Despite his marked proficiency in school, Severus would be bullied badly throughout school, especially by someone who had taken an interest of his own in Lily, James Potter. Over years, this whole situation wore him down much as his mother had been and, after suffering an indignity which Lily herself put an end to, he lashed out at the wrong target, Lily Evans. During the same period, he had sought membership into a group that many of his House Mates had found a home in, the Death Eaters. In his infatuation with the dark arts, he believed that he could impress Lily in being a part of something larger than himself. How deathly wrong he was in this combined with the slip of calling her a mudblood pushed Lily away from him and from there he began to immerse himself, not knowing what else to do, into the world he had found himself in.
He grew to see just how bad things were among the Death Eaters, but he knew there could be no easy way out, the Dark Lord was ruthless and would brook no such betrayal. Severus was sent to shadow Dumbledore when he had been reported to be about to visit a seer to interview her for the position of Divinations Professor at Hogwarts. Seeking a way out, Severus instead wrote a letter to Lily, apologising to her and telling her just what mess he was in. She came to his rescue once again, it was through her that he sought his own audience with Dumbledore. Though Dumbledore had initial reservations, there was something within Severus that he saw the truth in, and Severus would become a double agent. At first only Dumbledore knew of this, but having been seen with Snape, the Headmaster chose to explain himself. Severus has been considered a member of the Order since, and has taken on the role of Potions Professor, but he has never had the trust of its members. Dumbledore quietly asserts his confidence in Snape, but it very much seems that there are few who truly agree.

Roleplaying sample: Auriga had been in the Forbidden Forest more than once in her time at Hogwarts, quite often as a student. She had been camping when she lived in the muggle world, and she had been more than good enough at it. It was why she had taken her tent into the forest over the holidays, she had been in a good position to hear if there were anything wrong, or stirring that shouldn’t. Being a parcelmouth helped there, having a relationship, however terse ,with the centaurs didn’t hurt things. There were dangerous things in the forest, things that could swallow her in one bite, but she had quite the knack for duelling. No, if her biggest concern was getting lost and things that had bigger mouths than brains, she was not all too worried about spending time here.
Which was not to say that she would recommend it to students, as hypocritical as that may sound, in any conditions. Let alone when it was cold and there were fewer people around than might be if something were to go wrong. But then students did not always think about that, even those who should have more sense. Auriga knew that there was a student in the forest somewhere, her snakes had found her and told her, they knew enough about vital signs even in those they were not stalking as prey to know that the student’s were not in the best shape. Now Auriga could have sent a patronus to the school, she could have sent up sparks, but she was closer and there was little need to cause a fuss.
She had been tracking the student when the strains of Evacuate the dancefloor reached her ears. She bit her bottom lip as she made her way towards her. If she had been in the forest as long as Auriga suspected she had been, then hypothermia might be close if she had not taken precautions, Auriga herself could change the temperature of the air around her, though at the moment she had only developed that spell to the point where she could do it to herself. That’s what the cloak she was wearing and the firewhiskey she carried was for. She had chocolate as well as general first aid supplies, it was never wise to be unprepared in any forest, let alone here. As she saw the student she was seeking, she ran her face through her mind, seeking a name, she was a prefect, that much was sure. When it clicked, she commented, “Miss Monty, singing while lost here is either a good way to get help or to get eaten, it is never quite certain which in the Forbidden Forest.” Annie may have known her, Auriga was only two years older than her and had been a seeker for Slytherin besides, but keeping it formal brooked no room for argument, which was important at the moment. She unclasped the cloak that she wore around herself and offered it to Annie, not showing any ill effects herself as she lost a layer of clothing, “There are ways of moderating one’s temperature, but it is not a quick one lesson spell, so I would suggest firewhiskey and chocolate while we walk towards the castle, if you would be so inclined.” There was no scolding in her tone, nor inclination that Annie were in trouble, but there was just the slightest ‘it would be best to listen’ edge behind her words.
